HELEN VAUGHAN ARCHITECT
BAYVIEW 2003
The brief called for a residence that was crisp and controlled, and provided the occupants with a series of visual experiences by exploiting the natural slope and views that were inherent to the site. The building form combines a series of flat-roof geometries with vertical blades and horizontal canopies that provide privacy, shelter, and definition to the form. The open-plan rear living areas on both levels have north-facing glass below cantilevered eaves. The adjacent deck and balconies hover above the sloping rear garden and pool, providing views to the city beyond. The stair tower protrudes above the roof-line and allows light from slit windows to filter through the building interior while providing a visual link between the upper and lower living spaces. Internally, the stark white walls and minimal treatments combine with materials such as limestone, timber, glass, and lacquer to create a sense of elegance and quality. This strategy is continued externally with the use of jarrah decking, freestone walls, stainless steel handrails, and honed pavers.
